Montreal's total includes one Cup from 1916, the year before the NHL was founded. Toronto's includes two won under earlier team names.
A trophy older than the league
The Cup is named for Lord Stanley of Preston, who was Governor General of Canada. He donated it in 1892 as a prize for the country's best amateur hockey team. It was first awarded in 1893.
The NHL was founded in 1917. For its first years, its champion had to play the winners of other leagues for the Cup. Since the 1926-27 season, only NHL teams have competed for it.
It has gone unawarded twice. In 1919 the final series was stopped by the flu epidemic. In 2005 the whole season was cancelled by a labor dispute.
Montreal, and then everyone else
The Canadiens won five Cups in a row from 1956 to 1960, which is still the record. They won four more in a row from 1976 to 1979.
Their 24th came in 1993. No team from Canada has won the Cup since then.
Montreal has 24 Cups. Its last one, in 1993, is also the last one won by a Canadian team.
Toronto is second with 13 and has the longest wait in the league. The Maple Leafs last won in 1967, when the NHL had six teams. Detroit's 11 are the most by a team based in the United States.
The dynasties after them
Some teams won their Cups in short, dominant runs. The New York Islanders won four in a row from 1980 to 1983. The Edmonton Oilers, led for most of that time by Wayne Gretzky, won five in seven seasons between 1984 and 1990.
Winning two in a row has become the modern mark of a great team. The Pittsburgh Penguins did it in 2016 and 2017. The Tampa Bay Lightning did it in 2020 and 2021. The Florida Panthers did it in 2024 and 2025.
The Colorado Avalanche have a record of their own. They have played in the Final three times and won all three.
The newest champions
Carolina won the 2026 Cup by beating Vegas four games to two. The Hurricanes clinched with a 3-0 win in Game 6, on the road.
It was their second title and their first since 2006. Their captain, Jordan Staal, was named the most valuable player of the playoffs at age 37. He is the oldest player ever to win that award.
The 10 teams still waiting

Vancouver has come the closest. The Canucks lost the Final in 1982, 1994 and 2011, and the last two went to a seventh game.
One Cup, passed along
Most leagues make a new trophy for each champion. Hockey does not. There is one Stanley Cup, and each winner hands it to the next.
The names of the winning players are engraved on it. Every player on the winning team also gets to spend a day with the Cup during the summer, wherever he likes. It has been taken to hometowns all over the world.
